Planet Terror

Planet TerrorSo on Friday night I decided to go and see one of my most anticipated films of 2007, yes part of the double feature (but not outside the USA) Grindhouse, the film they call “Planet Terror”. So first of all let me give you some background information, I’ve always considered myself to be a bigger Rodriguez fan than a Tarantino fan, by the time I’d seen Reservoir Dogs I’d already seen and loved Desperado, The Faculty and From Dusk ‘Til Dawn (yes, I know Tarantino wrote it). So yes you can’t deny that Tarantino has a talent for character driven stories with pop culture flowing into the story at regular intervals. On the other hand you can’t get past the fact that Rodriguez is great at producing an action packed film with cracking effect and a belting storyline. So that’s probably why the idea of Grindhouse looked so good on paper, two friends in the industry with a stellar track record and an ability to take a novel idea and turn it into a money making and successful film.

I’m not sitting here and saying Grindhouse as a premise doesn’t/didn’t work, I just feel that in terms of logic it didn’t make sense for Grindhouse to have the high energy action packed Planet Terror to go first and be followed by Tarantino’s slower but intense thriller Death Proof.

So as I’ve admitted I like what Rodriguez does and had been looking forward to the film since I saw thPlanet Terror Characterse buzz surrounding it online earlier this year, luckily the film didn’t disappoint it felt like a real B-Movie or Troma effort, but with a bigger budget and plenty of light hearted jabs at it’s source material. The key thing I enjoyed more about Planet Terror is that it didn’t seem to use the Grindhouse effect as a gimmick and then almost forget about it in the third act like Death Proof. So Planet Terror had good action, some nice but brief character development, some quirky comedic moments and last but not least, vasts and ridiculous amounts of gore to the point where you feel that some characters are made of bags of blood, which was satisfying in a sick sort of way. Oh yeah a chick had a fully automatic rifle for a leg….. The NRA must have gotten so aroused by this movie.

Machete So yeah in conclusion I really enjoyed the film, which was made even more awesome by seeing the “Machete” trailer on a big ass screen, Danny Trejo is a great character actor, that is all that will be said about the man they call Trejo.

And now my fiance’s opinion on the film.

Gem Says:
“It was fucking awesome, but why does ‘Sayid’ (Naveen Andrews) always seem to have a posh accent?”
